The International Space University (ISU) was founded in April 1987 as a non-profit, non-governmental institution created to become the world's leading center for educating and training tomorrow's space professionals. One of the goals of ISU is to conduct design projects of interest to industry which give students a challenging problem in designing a specific system and program. In the 1993 summer session held at the University of Alabama at Huntsville, 38 students from 18 different countries worked to design the Global Emergency Observation and Warning (GEOWARN) System to address the growing impact of natural disasters on humans. This executive summary and the full report are the result of ten weeks of intense work resulting in a system design proposal which is a contribution to the International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction
