Subject: Catastrophic events are known to cause mental health problems in some victims. However, the scope and nature of such problems and the way they vary by type of disaster and type of community are important research issues yet to be resolved. The purpose of this monograph is to present papers on these topics by some of the outstanding investigators in disaster research. Most of the papers were prepared for a 1984 conference, jointly sponsored by the National Institute of Mental Health and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which focused on post-disaster needs assessment issues critical to a mental health response
