On the evening of 16 October 1996 a World Cup qualifying fixture between Guatemala and Cost Rica was staged at the Mateo Flores Stadium in Guatemala City. The fixture was scheduled for kick off at 2000 hours. At a time estimated by the police at 1920 hours there was a crushing incident in the Southern General area of the Stadium resulting in 78 deaths at the scene and a further 4 either in hospital on en route there. An estimated 100 others were injured in the crush. Those who died were believed to have been knocked down and trampled with the causes of death being described as asphyxia, compression of the chest and multiple injuries. A large number of those injured suffered fractures, scratches, blows and respiratory problems
