Subject: The intent of the seminar is to share, compare and evaluate existing knowledge and research findings in disaster mitigation and recovery as developed by American and Soviet social scientists, and particularly to develop a research agenda for mutually beneficial future study collaboration. The meeting will have the immediate effect of strengthening the disaster research tradition within the two countries which are already among the leaders in the area. Indirectly it should accelerate the development of an international network of disaster researchers which has started to come into being in the last decade. The seminar lasting five days was held at the Institute for System Studies of the USSR Academy of Sciences in Moscow. American participants drawn from nine universities around the country will represent six different disciplines; the Soviet participants, around a dozen in number, are from different research institutions in different parts of the country
