One of the largest public events in the State of Victoria (the 1989 Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix) witnessed an innovative approach to the prevention and reduction of harm associated with unsafe sex, alcohol and other drug use. The project, funded by the National Campaign Against Drug Abuse and the National AIDS Programme, sought to minimise harm by a number of techniques including restricting the sale of alcohol at the event to two open cans, utilising volunteers to distribute Health Dept. Victoria information and kits and establishing temporary care facilities for underage drinkers
