When a Wisconsin Central freight train slipped off the tracks in the center of Weyauwega, toppling some of the fourteen tanker cars carrying one million pounds of liquid propane fuel, the result was a massive explosion and fire; within hours Weyauwega was a ghost town. Because it was thought the evacuation would last just a few hours, many people left their animals behind. However, most were kept out of their homes for nearly three weeks by emergency officials.
