On 7 February 1989 a severe thunderstorm occurred in Melbourne. The magnitude of the downpour that followed exceeded anything the Bureau of Meteorology had anticipated. In addition to St. Kilda, areas of Prahran, South Melbourne, Hawthorn, Camberwell and Richmond were also affected by the resultant heavy rain. In all, more than 5 million cubic metres of rain fell on 76sq km. Six weeks after the storm the cost of insurance claims was already $14 million
