An examination of the impact of natural disasters and the resulting psychological symptomatology and psychiatric response experienced by victims of natural disasters are examined. The psychological sequelae associated with natural disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes, and tornadoes, and environmental disasters such as oil spills and pollution are reviewed. Clinical data are examined that address advances in understanding diagnostic indicators and resulting psychopathology in victims of natural disasters. Current models of processing of trauma are reviewed, as are recommendations for future research in this area
