Tasmania SES records reveal that the number of active volunteers working with the organization has steadily reduced by around 4% per annum. Several low cost initiatives to improve recruitment and retention met with little success. Two volunteer surveys were conducted (2002, 2007), the second with the sole intent of providing insights into motivational and other factors that may be affecting recruitment and retention. The results are presented here, and analysed. In addition, the author completed a literature review to further inform the development of appropriate strategies.
