Investigates the suitability of several rescue techniques involving timber extension ladders which form an integral part of the training program in the Queensland State Emergency Service. The analysis is conducted in accordance with the available Australian Standards and compares the actual stresses developed in the ladder with the permissible stresses specified in the relevant literature. From this analysis, the safe working loads for each rescue technique were calculated for reinforced and unreinforced ladders
