Subject: This paper aims to raise the awareness of local government disaster management planners and response oriented personnel in respect to hazards and risks which can and do have sociological, economical and environmental consequences when an emergency situation arises. Being aware of the existence of hazards in a local government area is the first step in being prepared to cope with them and their effects. Local government is 'at the coal-face' to be able to consider mitigation/prevention processes and to interface with other agencies in a hazard analysis process
