On 18 March 1990 a violent hailstorm affected the Sydney metropolitan area. The storm produced large hail in a swathe at least 45 km long and up to 10 km wide. The insurance payout was 313 million dollars, making it the most expensive thunderstorm event on record in Australia. This report describes the effects of the storm, documents the meteorological conditions associated with it and comments on the unusual features of this particularly severe storm event
