The principal objectives of the Murray River flood plain management study were to identify flooding problems within the 12,7000 km study area from Lake Hume to the South Australian border and to recommend a programme of detailed studies of these problems on a priority basis. The nature of the flooding problems being experienced in the study area are described firstly in general terms for the whole study area, then for two urban/rural reaches surrounding Cobram-Tocumwal and Swan Hill respectively and finally for the numerous individual towns along the river. A brief review of environmental issues and the effects of flooding on communications has been carried out and a detailed analysis of the Interstate Levees Agreement performed. The study recommends a seven year programme of detailed flooding investigations subdivided into high, medium and low priority areas
