Subject: The regional tectonic setting of Fiji and the distribution of shallow earthquakes in the Fiji Platform suggest that Fiji could expect to have a relatively high risk from tsunamis. However, the danger from tsunamis is not publicly recognised because spectacular tsunamis have been rare. The greatest risk in Fiji is from locally generated tsunamis, and travel times for these events are so short that an early warning system is not practical. For risk mitigation in these circumstances, public awareness and education and coastal zone management can be most effective
