Paper presented at 3rd Australian Conference on Coastal and Ocean Engineering, Melbourne, 18-21 April, 1977
Present methods of deriving surge height or storm tide estimates for coastal locations in cyclone areas are briefly reviewed, and statistical deficiencies highlighted. A new method based on the conditional probabilities of various storm surge or storm tide parameters is developed, and illustrated for Mackay using a simple model for surge generation. The method is general, and can be used with more complex models. Computer simulation is avoided by careful attention to the statistical design of the method
