Assessing the likelihood of evacuation next time : some preliminary findings from the FIU Hurricane Andrew survey.

Material type: TextTextSeries: International Hurricane Center preliminary report ; 3Publication details: Miami, Fla. : Florida International University, [199-?]Description: 10 pSubject: Hurricane Andrew and the damage suffered by Dade County have potentially altered the calculus of evacuation decision making from what it was prior to August, 1992. In addition, much of the population that resided in South Dade prior to Andrew is singularly unprepared for another hurricane, both in terms of the physical structures they reside in and their psychological state. The amounts of stress felt by members of many households may result in the evacuation of households who would not have normally considered such an action. In light of these potential alterations, the following report presents data related to possible evacuation behavior for a sample of households in Dade County. This report is not meant to be an exhaustive analysis of households likely to evacuate should another hurricane approach Dade County. Rather, it simply presents analyses that will allow for a coarse evaluation of the evacuation potential for selected populations in Dade County
