The four years since the Chernobyl disaster have not bought about the easing of its harmful consequences for the population, but, on the contrary, have seen significant expansion of the disaster area. The disaster provides a unique object for sociological investigation, not just because of its scale, but because the essence of the disaster is determined not so much by its technological components as by socially determined processes. The decisive component was disregard of people and absence of their real technological, ecological and social protection
