An examination of volcano hazard in the United States shows that the nation faces a low probability event of possible catastrophic proportions. The threats stem from a large range of specific volcanic phenomena, including lava flows, ash falls, volcanic mudflows and floods, tsunamis, forest fires, lightning, amd debris avalanches and landslides. The principle areas of volcano hazard are Hawaii, Alaska, and the Cascade Range of the Pacific Northwest. Makes recommendations for further research priorities
