Every year natural disasters destroy life, buildings, infrastructure, livelihood and impede development and economic progress. Improvements in the way people understand and manage their environment, integrated development planning, better education and a reduction in poverty, can all contribute to reducing the impact of natural hazards. Aid agencies should ensure that hazard management is systematically applied as part of their project appraisal procedures
