Tells how the Berkeley Unified School District successfully implemented effective earthquake hazard mitigation. After the 1989 Loma Prieta quake, a few parents discovered how poorly prepared the schools actually were for a major quake. Training was provided for all staff, emergency supplies were stockpiled, and structural and nonstructural hazards at each school were assessed. A struggle ensued to develop plans, involving many collateral issues, and devise a means to pay for it. By late 1993 structural and nonstructural hazards in the schools were being addressed, and by 1999 all school buildings will be retrofitted
