Subject: The authors have developed an infrared line scanner mounted in a light aircraft to map bushfires. The system is capable of producing maps in near real time which display fire boundaries accurately enough to show if the fire has crossed a road or fire break. The system is based on images collected by a Daedalus 1260 infrared line scanner mounted in a Beechcraft QueenAir fire-spotting aeroplane. While in flight a hard copy of the infrared image is printed by the line scanner, a cartographer estimates the boundary of the bushfire seen on the print and manually draws the boundary onto an orthographic map. This map can then be faxed or dropped to the crews fighting the fire
