Heatwaves are one of the least studied and most underrated natural hazards in Australia. This thesis takes the first step towards recognition of their significance, by investigating the consequences of heatwaves in Australia, particularly Sydney and Broken Hill. Examines 3 definitions of heatwaves, and concludes that a general and useful definition may be impossible. The consequences of heatwaves on human mortalitiy and lifelines are addressed
