Title verso: The following is a very basic and preliminary overview of fire events and statistics relating to the fires which affected much of NSW between December 27, 1993 and January 16, 1994. A detailed report will be compiled once all agencies have provided finite detail of their function and involvement
In excess of 800 fires started between 27 December 1993 and 16 January 1994 in NSW. Area burnt is estimated to be about 800 000 hectares. Intrusion by fire into the Sydney and nearby metropolitan areas occurred on a scale never before documented. Resources were marshalled from other states, the ADF and New Zealand. Despite the severity of the fires, losses were remarkably light. 4 people lost their lives. Over 190 houses were destroyed
