The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) makes flood insurance available for structures in communities which adopt and enforce floodplain management ordinances and regulations. Retrofitting of exisiting structures may constitute a cost-effective means of limiting future flood damage to exisiting structures, built before the adoption of NFIP-compliant floodplain management regulations. This manual provides generic guidance on technically feasible and cost-effective retrofitting techniques, which should be used in accordance with local regulations and specific site and structural conditions
