The Saint-Malo, a 41 metre catamaran passenger ferry with 300 passengers and 7 crew on board, left St Helier harbour on 17 April 1995 bound for Sark. The catamaran was grounded on La Frouquie rock, though the Master was able to steer the vessel out into safer water before all power was lost, though the vessel took om a large port list. The first rescue was on scene within minutes. The Master ordered the passengers to abandon ship. The investigation found the Master to be reckless in allowing his vessel to continue at high speed when he was aware that she was off track in a potentially dangerous position
