Subject: The workshop aimed to bring together a diverse group of people to discuss the most effective way in which UK resources, expertise and experience can be applied to reduce natural disaster risks. Key points that emerged from the discussions included the vital importance of systematic risk assessment, and the wide experiences of individuals and research bodies available in the UK to map hazards, assess vulnerability and undertake economic appraisal to advise on levels of protection. There was general agreement that social factors in assessing and reducing risks had been neglected, whilst greater emphasis had been given to physical elements such as buildings and infrastructure. Examples were cited of the effective role of British expertise in developing the Bangladesh Flood Action Plan with Overseas Development Administration (ODA) support, as well as a current ODA-funded project to provide support to small builders in the construction of safe dwellings
