Our ability to handle current disaster potential is still limited. Planning for hazard impacts is restricted by lack of basic information. The nature of human activity does little to assist. When looking to the future there are major uncertainties concerning the nature of the scenarios we will actually experience. We must consider the possibility that climate, and hence the basic characteristics of hazard occurence, will change, but we also need to look at factors like changing population distribution and structure. Strategies for handling future disaster situations are not necessarily any different from those we need to consider now. Involvement in the International Decade for Disaster Reduction is seen as an important element in our successful handling of future disasters
