Subject: Medium-Range prediction is a major research effort of the Bureau of Meteorology Research Centre (BMRC). This research focuses on the development and application of global assimilation and medium-range global prediction systems. The effective practice of Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) has been possible because of the increasing capacity of scientific computers and the burgeoning meteorological data base provided by the polar and geostationary satellites. The advent of remotely sensed satellite data has been of particular advantage in the southern hemisphere where it is now possible to define the state of the atmosphere over the oceanic areas which in conventional observing terms would otherwise remain as almost complete data voids.
