Results of studies on natural hazards and the elderly suggest that the elderly experience declining health, and have greater social disruption and higher levels of depression than members of the community at large. Research has also discriminated between elderly groups, finding differences in behavoiur based on economic status, race and gender. Others have indicated that kinship relationships, socio-psychological characteristics and familiarity with stressors are significant variables in influencing post-hazard behaviour. Age structure of the community may also play a role in percieved long-term support.
