Subject: This paper has two purposes: 1) to review the major issues that social scientists address with respect to reducing the risk from natural hazards in urban areas and 2) to provide an overview of the research findings associated with these issues. The paper focuses on the following issues: public threat perception and action; community-level disaster preparedness planning and response; community hazard mitigation actions. The paper concludes with a discussion of the importance of cross-national research to improve our understanding of social action and social organization with respect to disaster and hazard management
