Subject: Hurricane Marilyn struck the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico in September 1995, the first storm to hit the area since Hurricane Hugo seven years earlier. Although not as intense as Hugo, Marilyn's impacts were still dramatic - eight deaths, $2.1 billion in damage, and severe disruption of the island's tourism industry. This assessment of the performance of the National Weather Service during the hurricane includes information on the impacts of the storm, its hydrometeorology, preparedness activities, user response, and the performance of the National Weather Service in general. Appendices provide information on the Saffir-Simpson scale, the aerial survey of damage, river gauge heights and discharges during the storm, forecast procedures and errors associated with Marilyn, and sample hurricane statements and short-term forecasts
