Cover title: EUROflood : the Europe-wide project for flood hazard research and policy making
Evacuation has been the subject of much research in the United States, but little has been undertaken in a European context; or exclusively in terms of flood evacuation; or using a qualitative research method. For this reason the layout of this Technical Annex consists of an introduction to evacuation and the evacuation process; an introduction to qualitative research; and an introduction to the case studies utilised in this research. The main section is entitled "Qualitative insights into evacuation" where the discussion is based on individual householders' experiences of flooding and evacuation. This is followed by an examination of the problems and recommendations as drawn from those interviews, whilst the next section examines one of the case studies in more detail - Canvey Island - where flood evacuation is discussed over the longer term, within a context of extensive industrial and housing development, and yet where flood risk from a breach in the sea defences is still possible. In the final section, the results of a questionnaire survey to emergency planning departments in the UK on flood evacuation are discussed in light of the findings from the qualitative research
