The 3.7 mum thermal infrared images produced correspond closely to the areas where fires were reported. The data is analysed in terms of pixel brightness and the extreme sensitivity of the 3.7 mum channel. The article finally suggests that the use of real-time AVHRR imagery would be invaluable in assisting fire-fighting efforts at major disasters
