TIn September 1987 residents of the town of Goiania, Brazil were stricken with radiation poisoning and the whole town was found to be radioactive. This was the result of some residents having pulled apart an old x-ray machine from a nearby decommissioned hospital, and playing with the glowing Caesium 137 powder in the machine.
