Designed to introduce the subject of disaster management to an audience of UN organization professionals who form disaster management teams, as well as to government counterpart agencies, NGO's and donors. The training is designed to increase the audience's awareness of the nature and management of disasters. This should lead to better performance in disaster preparedness and response. This module examines the scope for measuring the risk of future losses and for using this knowledge to assist in the selection of an appropriate disaster mitigation strategy. It considers the nature of risk, and the difference between actual and perceived risk; it discusses the techniques by which natural hazards and the accompanying risk of future losses can be estimated; and it discusses the ways in which future risk estimates can be used to assist the choice of the optimum disaster mitigation strategy.
