Subject: Procedures use for the mitigation of disasters due to cyclone wind, flood, storm surge, bushfire, and drought are examined with particular regard to the mitigation potential of land use control menthods. It is concluded that land use control can play a significant role in natural disaster mitigation. An examination of the Australian scene indicates that for various reasons this is not done in Australia and some reasons as to why this may be so are suggested.
