In response to this threat, over half a million residents of this area were evacuated from their homes. This report presents the results of a study of that mass evacuation and events preceeding and following it. It is based on a sample survey of 1,534 households in eight Louisiana parishes and 13 Texas counties that felt the force of the hurricane to some extent. The sample survey interview data are used to test a series of hypotheses relating to warning, the decision-making processes in behavior, and the choice of shelter areas and types of shelter.
