Subject: The objective of this brief survey is to examine some of the past experience and literature, dealing with the subject of earthquakes and fire, with the emphasis on the role of gas and the possible use of automatic shut off valves. The survey presents a summary of past earthquake experience in the United States, overseas, and in Japan, discusses the present earthquake threat in California, particularly in Los Angeles, and suggests some conclusions focussing on the use of the automatic gas shut off valves
