Dam failure and flood inundation studies for Googong Dam.

By: Material type: TextTextLanguage: ENG Publication details: DEC 1986Description: 63p., 1 appendix, 6 maps, 19 figs., 13 tablesSubject: This report details the analysis, results and discussion for Googong Dam from the Canberra Dams "Dam Break" project commissioned by the NCDC (brief El80/83) and accepted by the Hydrology and Water Resources Section of the Department of Housing and construction (now of the Department of Territories) in November 1983. The analysis of Googong Dam in NSW now operated by the Department of Territories included determination of the inundation that would occur downstream of the dam in the event of failure. The investiations employed the use of a one dimensional unsteady flow computer model to analyse the dambreak and subsequent movement of water downstream of the dam. This report outlines the background to the dambreak analysis and the results of the dam failure. It includes the flood inundation maps for the river reach downstream of the dam for various failure modes, namely: Routed Imminent Failure Flood (RIFF), Type 1 dam failure during normal operating conditions and Type 2 dam failure initiated by a hydrological event greater than the Imminent Failure Flood (IFF)
