Subject: Considerable emphasis has been given in recent years to the development of methodologies for use in earthquake loss estimation. While the results of these efforts are impressive, and while considerably more is known about potential earthquake losses than ten years ago, this knowledge is still quite uneven and incomplete. Moreover, some types of potential eathquake impacts have been given very little emphasis. The estimation of earthquake casualties is among these topics, with the present state of knowledge being, at best, rudimentary. This paper seeks to address some of these issues
