In such a situation, the rapid delivery of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) becomes a matter of critical importance. Beginning in 1984 and continuing to the present, an effort has been underway to develop national, voluntary guidelines and standards for all facets of EMS. This effort has been organised as committee F-30 on emergency medical services of the American Society for the Testing of Materials (ASTM), and has entailed a major involvement on the part of a full range of EMS professionals, including private sector individuals and federal, state and local officials.
