Subject: Investigation of the storms over Sydney during the evening of 10 November 1976 shows that a sequence of thunderstorms originated over elevated terrain to the southwest of the city and subsequently entered the severe stage prior to moving over the city. In the severe stage the storms exhibited anomalous movement to the high pressure side of the mid-tropospheric flow. The resultant heavy rainfall, large hail and strong wind gusts caused extensive damage throughout the Sydney metropolitan area
