There is some evidence of tornadic activity within these squalls. Local eyewitness reports, however, did not confirm this. The synoptic situation is discussed and a study of the available meteorological data confirms the presence of severe thunderstorm activity. Assessments pf maximum wind speed based on both structural damage and aerological data suggests wind speeds in excess of 160 km/h (100 mph)
