In 1972 a map of the City of Wollongong showing zones of relative stability on the Illawarra escarpment was published, as a basis for planning of future development in the city. In 1974 however, after heavy rains, many failures occurred and several of these were in zones marked as stable on the 1972 maps. This study examines two of these failures and points to the imperative need for detailed investigation to supplement regional planning guidelines
