The diagnosis and assessment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PSTD) is dealt with. A thorough understanding of the major symptoms and associated features of PSTD, as well as the subtypes and course of the disorder, form the backbone of assessment procedures. Given the many difficulties surrounding the accurate diagnosis of PSTD, appropriate assessment procedures are indicated. The multitude of theoretical explanations for the development of PSTD and subsequent symptomatic picture are presented and the various therapeutic modalities that have been used in the treatment of PSTD are outlined
