By: Material type: TextTextLanguage: ENG Publication details: 20 APR 1976Description: 7p., no refsReport number: Institutional/Corporate Body; UNESC-E/5796Subject: The earthquake, which measured 7.5 on the Richter scale, occurred at 0302 local time on 4 February 1976. Within Guatemala itself the area of significant damage extended on both sides of the Motagua fault between Quirigua and Lake Atitlan, with the major damage in the western part of this area and almost total destruction of buildings in a roughly triangular zone bounded by Joyabaj, Quiche, Lake Atitlan, and Mixco, Guatemala. The northern section of Guatemala City itself was also particularly hard hit. In the central and southern areas, where the more robust and modern buildings predominate, less damage was caused. Fortunately, the airport is in the southern area and remained operational throughout, although the terminal building was temporarily closed for a short period. A second earthquake on 6 February, measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale caused further damage and many hundreds of other lesser tremors were registered throughout the succeeding days and weeks. The report covers the cost in casualties and damage, the initial problems, and the international relief efforts that were made to assist in the emergency
