Lives were lost and vast damage sustained. Storms generally weakened as they approached the island, and people were inclined to believe the Meteorology Office to be alarmist. Despite the havoc, after the hurricane passed houses have been re-built in the same position and the same manner. The government did issue advice on hurricane proofing housing, but did not ensure that the builders complied with the directions. People now are more aware of the dangers, but have taken few precautions to prevent another disaster of the same dimensions
