Atmospheric scientists have evidence to suggest that over the next 50 years significant global climate change is probable as a result of increasing levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. While currently only generalised global predictions of climate change are available, there is a clear need for more detailed descriptions of how the Australian region will be affected. Some estimates of the most likely changes for the Australian region can be made using the results of computer model calculations of the Earth's atmospheric circulation under increased greenhouse gas levels, and combining these results with observations of changes that have occured already this century. The scenario presented represents what is believed to be a plausible future climate for the Australian region. It is presented to allow an examination of the type, magnitude and likely impacts of such changes in regional climate and sea level
