This progress report is a summary of preliminary test results obtained in what is planned to be an extensive research programme. A major activity of this programme is a study of the transmission of horizontal forces from the external walls through the roof and ceiling structure to the bracing walls. Initial work is being focussed on the diaphragm action of ceilings. Three ceiling panels were tested using asbestos cement sheeting on timber battens, plaster board sheets on timber battens, and plaster board sheets on light gauge steel furring channels respectively. The wide range of results obtained confirmed the need for a more detailed investigation and raised questions about the adequacy of some currently accepted systems of construction. .550.
